IMPORTANT!! PLANT IDENTIFICATION INFORMATION

  • The plant identification list has been revised. The new list can be downloaded by clicking here, or from Guy Hodgdon. The exam will be taken from the new list.

  • Exam takers are expected to know the scientific and common names of plants unless otherwise specified on the list (scientific names are not required for weeds, annuals and bulbs). For each plant there will be a plant or a piece of the plant and pictures of the plant. Most pictures are from Horticopia or the following sources:

University of Connecticut plant data base of trees shrubs and vines http://www.hort.uconn.edu:591/search.html

Oregon State University -Landscape plants (woody plants, perennials, annuals and bulbs) http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ldplants/

Virginia Tech Weed Identification Guide http://www.ppws.vt.edu/scott/weed_id/rightsid.htm

Virginia Technology tree fact sheets http://www.fw.vt.edu/dendro/dendrology/factsheets.cfm

    Perry's perennial pages http://pss.uvm.edu/ppp/perpix.htm

Horticopia (a plant database software program) can be purchased from Horticopia.com. There are many different versions but the student version Horticopia A-Z is $99.00 and has most of the plants on the NHCLP list except for weeds. It can also be used to make up plant info sheets for customers. Horticopia.com also has pictures of the plants that you can access for free but there are usually just one picture for each plant.

It is best to study the plants extensively before the review session. The review will be used to go over plants that people are having difficulty with.
