David DeJohn
DeJohn Landscaping,LLC
Canterbury, NH

David DeJohn operates a small Landscape company in Canterbury, NH, where he lives on 91/2 acres with his wife, Roberta, and two dogs. 2009 marks his 20th year in business and his 29th in the landscape industry.

90% of DeJohn's business is from design and installations and the remainder from maintenance and spring and fall clean-ups. During the winter he prunes apple trees, specializing in renovating old and neglected trees.

Originally from California, David started hitch-hiking around the U.S. in 1976, when he thumbed it up to Alaska. He attended college and continued hitch-hiking, ending up in New Hampshire for the first time in 1979. He was immediately attracted to the beauty as well as the work ethic here so came back in 1980 when he was hired by Rick Rideout, who was just starting his business, Three Seasons Landscaping.

Back then landscapers worked from March to the end of October when he would be laid off; so he would head out and travel around the country coming back to New Hampshire in time for apple tree pruning.

Each time he came back, David says, he became more established here, learning the landscape business from Rick, who used to drill him on the Latin names of plants as they drove to jobs. Most of Dave's knowledge in landscaping has come from hands on experience while working with Three Seasons and other landscape companies.

Dave took two years of landscape design at UNH, and has taken full advantage of the courses and workshops offered by the UNH Cooperative Extension for the last 20 years. He is currently taking classes when he can at NHTI in their Landscape Certificate program.

Dave thinks that one of best things he did early on was to become a member of NHLA, which he did in 1989. Then he received his NH Landscape Certification in 2003. An active NHLA member, he always enjoys the conferences and Twilight meetings put on by the NHLA and over the years has become more involved in the organization. He is currently President of the NHLA Board of Directors.. Dave says, "Between the educational aspects and the chance to meet and learn from other people in the business, being a member of NHLA has been instrumental in making me a better Landscaper."
